  2. Abeka or BJU | Homeschool Spot

    homeschoolspot.com/connect/index.php?threads/abeka-or-bju.20911

We used Abeka from K-12. In my experience Abeka used Phonics past the grade that you stated and from K-2 students learned to read and from 3rd grade on, they read to learn. Abeka has a really good reading program with lots of Phonics reinforcement.

  3. Starting Abeka mid-year - Homeschool Spot

We had done Abeka Science and Language Arts for 3rd and 4th last year with the girls. I went to private school and used Abeka k-6th and Bob Jones for 7th-9th. I know it is very rigorous, but we want our kids to be on grade level with their peers and the unit study approach was all over the place.

  4. Abeka Math vs R&S Math - Homeschool Spot

    homeschoolspot.com/connect/index.php?threads/abeka-math-vs-r-s-math.19552

I really want to choose a math and stick with it until higher math. I am narrowed down to R&S Math or Abeka Math. I feel my 3rd grader could switch into 3rd grade Abeka, but my 4th grader would have to do 3rd grade instead of 4th grade math with Abeka. With R&S, I could probably put my 4th grader into their 4th grade no problem.

  5. Oh My! Abeka phonics vs. other - Homeschool Spot

    homeschoolspot.com/connect/index.php?threads/oh-my-abeka-phonics-vs-other.11485

Abeka didn't work for my son at all and it ended up being a waste of money, they do hotel shows where you can preview the materials before you spend so much you might want to look into that. For phonics, we're using a combo of Explode The Code & Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons.

  6. Please compare BJU and Abeka English (grades 6 and up)

    homeschoolspot.com/connect/index.php?threads/please-compare-bju-and-abeka-english...

I love BJU English. It is well organized and spells out exactly what needs to be done and so on. Abeka is too abstract and all over the place. The writing is so weak that you need to suppliment with another writing program. We have a homeschool store near us that has used stuff so I have been able to spend a fair amount of time looking over Abeka.

  7. Cle or Abeka Question - Homeschool Spot

    homeschoolspot.com/connect/index.php?threads/cle-or-abeka-question.25469

People seem to think that Abeka is the be-all and end-all of Christian curriculum. However, I have to tell you this little story: I had a student who was with me 5 years from 4th through 8th grades. She was since day one, one level behind in CLE LA, but on-level in reading (her big struggle was math).

  8. Abeka vs BJU - Homeschool Spot

    homeschoolspot.com/connect/index.php?threads/abeka-vs-bju.22346

I was told Abeka was good for conversational, but BJU was better for the grammar. If I wanted Vicki to go to college I needed BJU. I need all the help I can get on this one. Should I do Abeka just for the conversations and later in 9th and 10th grade do BJU for high school credits.

  9. Abeka K4 Or K5?? - Homeschool Spot

    homeschoolspot.com/connect/index.php?threads/abeka-k4-or-k5.12161

I started my daughter with K5 when she was 4 1/2, Abeka lets you do that. She already knew her alphabet, letter sounds, and numbers up to about 35. Don't worry about the numbers if you use K5, she'll catch up, or you can also get her some math games, or do some free online math games , I think they have some at gamequarium.

  10. Horizons or Abeka Math?? | Homeschool Spot

    homeschoolspot.com/connect/index.php?threads/horizons-or-abeka-math.21822

That being said, I have taught Abeka for years and think that it is one of the best (possibly THE best) curriculum out there. I would highly recommend it for her math. My main reason for not using Abeka for my children is because SOS makes it so easy since it does the lesson plans, grading, etc. for you, taking a tremendous load off of the parent.

  11. Abeka or BJU science? - Homeschool Spot

    homeschoolspot.com/connect/index.php?threads/abeka-or-bju-science.31382

Abeka doesn't change THAT much from one edition to the next! If it has the same title, it's not SO much different. They may update a new fact or two, rearrange chapters into a different order, change up the quizzes and tests a bit, but SOMEtimes (with a little work, reading ahead and editing) you can even use one set of TM/quizzes/tests ...
