As a unitary authority, Leicester City Council provides both county-level and district-level services. Some services are provided via joint committees with other councils, notably the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and Leicestershire Constabulary, which are run by joint boards of the city council with Leicestershire County Council and Rutland County Council.

The Mayor of Leicester, styled City Mayor to distinguish from the Lord Mayor of Leicester, is the directly elected mayor responsible for the executive function of Leicester City Council in England. The incumbent is Peter Soulsby of the Labour Party .
The area is defined by Saffron Road to the east, the Birmingham to Peterborough railway to the south, and Leicester Road to the west. [7] Although located in the far south-west corner of Leicester, the area is under the administration of Leicester City Council rather than Leicestershire County Council as some of the neighbouring areas are.
