The Kindle version is around $15. As Shaun says, likely 1983...or later. Around that time, S&W switched to a three alpha, up to 4 numeric numbering system like BBBxxxx Here's the lookup table. J Serial Prefix Models: 36, 37, 38, 49, 50.
With cylinder swung out the yoke is stamped 36-1. The hammer main spring is coil type with center rod and ball on lower end instead of leaf spring. RH side plate has only three screws. Serial number on bottom of frame is only three digit, 9XXJ1. I have been told it is an early model 36-10 not 36-1.
Model numbers are stamped on the frame inside the yoke and are visible when you have the cylinder completely open and you look on the frame where it meets the yoke, usually seen as MOD 36. If your gun is an airweight Chief's special, that would be the same gun in a lightweight version, now known as the Model 37.

The coil spring main in the j-frames makes it a bit difficult to get a light D/A pull with positive ignition though not impossible. My stock 36 and 60 are smooth but my wife's 649 with a trigger job from Actions by "T" is exceptional and the D/A breaks at 9 lbs. Larger grips tend to make the D/A feel a tad lighter on j-frames too.
The Model 37 should be a little more accurate than the M-36 because of the extra barrel length. But because of the lightweight frame it might not be as easy to shoot. The weight is what reduces the felt recoil. Both of these were designed to shoot 38 Special ammo in the 158 grain bullet weight.
model 36 VS Classics model 36. Are tere any real differences in quality between the two? obvious thing ive noticed is that the hammer mounted firing pin is on the older models. Only other thing, and this may be my imagination, but it seems like the curve on the back where the hammer sits is widened/less of a curve on the newer S&W classics line ...
It certainly won't detract from the value fo your wheelgun. If it's source may have some history I'd say yes. If it's just another model 36 with no real indication of it's history, I'd probaly pass on spending the $50 for the letter. So far I have only one &S that's lettered, and that's because it czame to me that way.
