The original powers for the branch to Pembroke lapsed, and so in 1859 the Pembroke and Tenby Railway was authorised to build a 4 ft 8 + 1 ⁄ 2 in (1,435 mm), standard gauge line from Pembroke Dock to Tenby. The line opened from Tenby to Pembroke on 30 July 1863 and to Pembroke Dock on 8 August 1864.
There used to be one daily service to Rosslare Europort. The service connected with Stena Line and Irish Ferries sailings to Fishguard and Pembroke Dock in the UK respectively. This rail service was announced to be suspended starting from 21 July 2010. [1] It was replaced by a revised Bus Éireann Route 370 service from 20 September 2010.
The station is not owned by Network Rail, [6] but by Stena Line. A large part of the station is contained within the port building, where there are seating and toilets. However, there are no railway ticket machines, and the station is staffed only by Stena Line personnel; no rail staff are employed there. This means there is no rail ticket office.

Following investment from Network Rail and Pembrokeshire County Council the station has now been re-built and was reopened for passengers again, on 14 May 2012. It is served by the boat trains and the newly introduced local trains. The harbour is used by Stena Line ferries to Rosslare Europort in Ireland.
