Keystone is a town in the Black Hills region of Pennington County, South Dakota, United States.The population was 240 at the 2020 census. [5] It had its origins in 1883 as a mining town, and has since transformed itself into a resort town, serving the needs of the millions of visitors to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which is located just beyond the town limits.
There are 16 National Historic Landmarks (NHLs) in South Dakota, one of which is shared with Iowa and listed by the National Park Service as primarily in that state. They have been designated in 13 of South Dakota's 66 counties. Most are along rivers, long the chief areas of human settlement in this arid place.

It splits from US 16 in the Black Hills of the southwestern part of the U.S. state of South Dakota. The highway's western terminus is an intersection with US 16, US 385, and South Dakota Highway 89 (SD 89) in Custer. The eastern terminus is at an interchange with US 16 called Keystone Wye south of Rapid City.

The Keystone School, on 3rd St. in Keystone, South Dakota, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. It is a large rural school built 1897-1900 by Eli Shomaker, with roof of wood shingles. [2] In 2018, it has been the Keystone Historical Museum for a number of years. [3]
It is located close enough to Rapid City, Hill City, and Keystone to serve as a bedroom community. A larger commercial area has grown up on US Highway 16 approximately 1 mile east, known as "East Rockerville" or "Rockerville Flats" with various tourist-oriented businesses and more residential areas.
