Gold Trail School was constructed in 1957 to accommodate all K-8th students. The graduating class of 1960 consisted of nine students. In 1991, Sutter's Mill Elementary School was opened, and Gold Trail School was designated only to 4th-8th grade students while Sutter's Mill handled the Pre-K through 3rd grade students.

STMA was formerly known as St. Thomas More School. It used to be located at Avenida St. Bahayang Pag-asa Subdivision, and Jacinto that is now the Jetti Gas Station. The school burned down and transferred the building near Iglesia ni Cristo church. The academy was founded in 1990 and has four branches in the Philippines.
The mill was constructed between 1868 and 1879 by John Griffin and Levi J. Loveless. Subsequent owners included W. Scott Freeman, his son Winfield, and Newt Pharr. The mill operated into the 1980s, making it one of the last operating gristmills in the county. In the 1990s, the mill was purchased by Gwinnett County and was restored in 2009.
In 1873 or early 1874, Freeman S. Raymond, a member of the original forty-niners, built his stagecoach station here, at the junction of the Walker Pass road (the route of modern California 178) and the road to Los Angeles (now California State Route 14). Both roads carried traffic to and from the mines then in the area.
