British Army officer in the First World War A man wearing a short navy blue–coloured trenchcoat (2018). A trench coat is a variety of coat made of waterproof heavy-duty fabric, [1] originally developed for British Army officers before the First World War, and becoming popular while used in the trenches, hence the name trench coat.
Manufactured by Case in the USA for the Canadian Military until 1948 when production moved to Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada. Markings include "Case XX Metal Stampings" on the base of the sheeps foot blade and a C with a broad arrow inside stamped on the scales (case) normally near the rivet holding the blades.
The Canadian Army later replaced work dress with "No. 4 (Garrison) Dress", which consisted of the old-style work dress pants, a disruptive-pattern jacket, a black web belt, a short-sleeve summer Service Dress shirt with the collar open and over the jacket collar, and high paratrooper-style garrison boots.
