The chasers, darters, skimmers, and perchers and their relatives form the Libellulidae, the largest family of dragonflies. [2] It is sometimes considered to contain the Corduliidae as the subfamily Corduliinae and the Macromiidae as the subfamily Macromiinae.
Pantala flavescens, [3] the globe skimmer, globe wanderer or wandering glider, [1] is a wide-ranging dragonfly of the family Libellulidae. [1] This species and Pantala hymenaea, the "spot-winged glider", are the only members of the genus Pantala.
They occur in both bare and sunny locations, where it is often the first dragonfly to colonise new habitats such as newly created ponds, and well vegetated ponds. L. depressa are often seen away from water as the adults are very mobile and undergo a period of maturation away from water after emergence. The adults are also migratory.
The adult dragonfly crawls out of its nymph exoskeleton, the exuvia, arching backwards when all but the tip of its abdomen is free, to allow its exoskeleton to harden. Curling back upwards, it completes its emergence, swallowing air, which plumps out its body, and pumping haemolymph into its wings, which causes them to expand to their full extent.
One of the largest species in Europe, the emperor dragonfly is exceeded by magnificent emperor, which occurs only marginally in the east Mediterranean [9] and in length by females of the golden-ringed dragonfly, a species with an unusually long ovipositor. [10] Thus, in most of Europe the emperor is the largest dragonfly species present.
