Middelburg (Afrikaans pronunciation: [ˈmədəlbœrχ]) is a town in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, in the Great Karoo. It lies in the Upper Karoo, 1,279 m above sea level, with a population of 19,000. [3] It falls under the Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality, in the Chris Hani District Municipality.
Middelburg has a deep Christian origin, for the oldest Dutch Reformed church is the one mentioned above which is better known as "Die Witkerk." Churches in the town are: The Dutch Reformed (NG Kerk) Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika (Nederduits Reformed Church of Africa) since 01.04.1864 - 2 parishes, Middelburg and Middelburg-Noord 28.08.1977

From Willowmore, the N9 travels across the Eastern Cape Karoo as the Perdepoort Pass, through Aberdeen to Graaff-Reinet.At Aberdeen, the N9 is joined by the R61 and they are concurrent through Graaff-Reinet (where they meet the R63) and for the next 46 kilometers before the R61 becomes its own road eastwards near Nieu-Bethesda.
The R56 continues eastwards for 30 kilometres to meet the R391 road and turn to the east-south-east. It proceeds for 17 kilometres to meet the R397 road. The R56 & R397 are one road south-east for 15 kilometres, through the town of Molteno (where it makes a left & right turn), before the R397 becomes its own road southwards. [1]
