Quercus cerris, the Turkey oak or Austrian oak, [3] [4] is an oak native to south-eastern Europe and Asia Minor. It is the type species of Quercus sect. Cerris , a section of the genus characterised by shoot buds surrounded by soft bristles, bristle-tipped leaf lobes, and acorns that usually mature in 18 months.
Various folk cultures and traditions assign symbolic meanings to plants. Although these are no longer commonly understood by populations that are increasingly divorced from their rural traditions, some meanings survive. In addition, these meanings are alluded to in older pictures, songs and writings.
Phlomis russeliana, Turkish sage, is a species of flowering plant in the family Lamiaceae, native to Turkey and Syria in south west Asia. It is often confused with the closely related P. samia, [2] and wrongly marketed as Phlomis viscosa. [3]
Quercus laevis is a small tree, sometimes shrubby, typically only 8–10 meters (26–33 feet) tall, though occasionally reaching 28 m (92 ft).The leaves are variable in size, mostly 10–17 centimeters (4– 6 + 3 ⁄ 4 inches) long but occasionally just 8 cm (3 + 1 ⁄ 4 in) or as much as 30 cm (12 in) long.
Despite the known toxicities, the plant has been described as edible for 2,000 years [8] [34] and incorporated into some traditional regional cuisines (e.g. Turkey) [35] and traditional medicine (e.g. India). [36] In Britain, the plant has long been the subject of herbals for its claimed culinary and medicinal properties.
For the purposes of this category, "Turkey" is defined in accordance with the World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions. That is, the geographic region is mostly defined by its political boundaries except it excludes the part of Turkey geographically aligned with Southeastern Europe (see Category:Flora of European Turkey ).
Salt steppes and lakes are found here, as well salt-free grassland areas, marshes and freshwater systems. Immediately around the large Lake Tuz and other saline areas, saltmarsh plants grow, and beyond this is a sharp divide, with the flora being dominated by members of the families Chenopodiaceae and Plumbaginaceae. [6]
Sempervivum (/ s ɛ m p ə ˈ v aɪ v əm / [1] [2]) is a genus of about 40 species of flowering plants in the family Crassulaceae, commonly known as houseleeks.Other common names include liveforever (the source of the taxonomical designation Sempervivum, literally "always/forever alive") and hen and chicks, a name shared with plants of other genera as well.
