Outside the UK, the song was released as part of a five-track EP titled The Alarm. [3] The EP was released to coincide with the Alarm's first tour of the U.S. in June 1983. Following the success of the sessions that produced "The Stand", I.R.S. picked up their recording option on the band, signalling the start of work on an album.
The Alarm was the band's first album release, though two excerpted singles, "Marching On" and "The Stand", were both released before the EP. "For Freedom" was recorded live at The Marquee, Wardour Street, London W.1. on 30 January 1983.
