Rocky Knob Recreation Area is a 4,500 acres (18 km 2) recreation area along the Blue Ridge Parkway, which spans from mile markers 167–174. [1] The park is home to 15 miles of hiking trails, 81 tents camping sites, 28 RV sites, and 72 picnic sites. [2] The campground is open seasonally, typically from May–October.
The park can be separated into five distinct sections: the day-use area, the residence area, the group camp area, the campground area, and the trails area. The day-use area contains directional and entrance signs, an informational kiosk, the parking lot, baseball and softball diamonds, combination picnic shelter/toilet building, and pump house.
The picnic area includes three covered shelters, two of which were built by the CCC in 1933. The first is about 24 by 14 feet (7.3 m × 4.3 m), built with open log construction and topped by a gable roof. The north and south sides of the shelter have log balustrades, while the other two sides are open; a picnic table is set under the shelter. [3]
