It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series.
It replaced the 2.0-liter EJ205 engine used since the WRX model's introduction. The larger-displacement engine produced 235 lb⋅ft (319 N⋅m) of peak torque at 3,600 rpm, compared to 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) at 4,000 rpm for the previous WRX. Performance was improved in all speed ranges, with greater emphasis on low-end and mid-range torque.
