The Melbourne Royal Show (known until 2022 as the Royal Melbourne Show) is an agricultural show held at Melbourne Showgrounds every September. It is organised by Melbourne Royal (formally the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria ) and has been running since 1848. [ 1 ]
It serves the Melbourne Showgrounds and suburb of Flemington, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Showgrounds station is a ground level unstaffed station, featuring one side platform. It opened on 7 November 1883. [1] The station is only used during special events at the Melbourne Showgrounds, such as the annual Royal Melbourne Show.
The Melbourne International Exhibition was held from 1 October 1880 until 30 April 1881. It was the second international exhibition to be held in Australia , the first being held the previous year in Sydney . 1.459 million people visited the exhibition, made a profit of £1,570. [ 3 ]
The event has also been held in Brisbane in 2002 and since 2011 has been held biennially at the Sydney Showgrounds, alternating each year with the Melbourne Showgrounds. [2] [3] Definitive Events have been running Equitana Australia since 1999. [4] In 2014, Equitana returned to the biannual format.

The Exhibition Building, constructed in 1880 for the Melbourne International Exhibition, was extended and reused. The Centennial Exhibition focused on Australia itself, and emphasised music and painting that attracted many visitors. [2] However the Exhibition was not recognised by the Bureau of International Expositions as a "world's fair".
