The du Pont family (English: / d uː ˈ p ɒ n t /) [1] or Du Pont family is a prominent American family descended from Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739–1817), a French minor aristocrat. It has been one of the richest families in the United States since the mid-19th century, when it founded its fortune in the gunpowder business.

Pierre du Pont was born on 14 December 1739, the son of Samuel du Pont and Anne Alexandrine de Montchanin. His father was a watchmaker and French Protestant, or Huguenot. His mother was a descendant of an impoverished minor noble family from Burgundy.
The son of Éleuthère Irénée du Pont II, a partner in the family's gunpowder business, and Charlotte Shepard Henderson, Alfred I. du Pont had two older sisters and two younger brothers. When du Pont was 13, his mother, who had a history of mental illness, was committed to an asylum following an episode of hysteria. [5] Within a week, she died.

Heir to the du Pont family fortune, [1] he was a published ornithologist, philatelist, conchologist, and sports enthusiast. In 1972, du Pont founded and directed the Delaware Museum of Natural History and contributed to Villanova University and other institutions. [1]
