The Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Segunda División, [a] commonly known as Segunda División, and officially known as LaLiga HyperMotion [b] for sponsorship reasons, is the men's second professional association football division of the Spanish football league system.
The 1986–87 Segunda División season saw 18 teams participate in the second flight Spanish league. It was the longest season ever in Spanish football. The league was reduced to 18 teams and had two phases. In the first one all 18 teams played each other twice (home and away).
The top two tiers of the male league pyramid — Primera División (a.k.a. La Liga) and Segunda División (a.k.a. La Liga 2) — are administered by the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional, a sports association with independent legal status from the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), the governing body of football in Spain.
