[6] A college town, Oxford was founded as a home for Miami University and lies in the southwestern portion of Ohio, approximately 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Cincinnati, 14 miles (23 km) of Hamilton and 35 miles (56 km) southwest of Dayton.
The state bought the land in 1941, but the park did not open until 1957. The state used the land initially as a prison camp. [citation needed] In 1956, Four Mile Creek was dammed to form Acton Lake, named for Clyde Acton, the member of the Ohio General Assembly who persuaded the legislature to buy the property. [4]

This wooden bridge was built in 1869 over Four Mile (Talawanda) Creek and is one of two remaining covered bridges in Butler County, Ohio. The other is the Bebb Park or State Line covered bridge built in 1868. [2]
