[7] The name Whakatipu is shared with several nearby geographic features, including Lake Wakatipu [a] and Whakatipu Kā Tuka (the Hollyford River) though this name is an archaic term and its original meaning is no longer known. The Wairoa River carries large quantities of fine sediment (clays, silts and sands) that cloaks both the bed and the banks of the river. The rate of sediment loss has increased because of changes in land use from native forest to pasture, and forestry and farming land use practices, with current sediment losses estimated to be approximately 240% higher than before human arrival.
The Hutt River (Māori: Te Awa Kairangi, Te Wai o Orutu or Heretaunga; officially Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River) flows through the southern North Island of New Zealand. It flows south-west from the southern Tararua Range for 56 kilometres (35 mi), forming a number of fertile floodplains , including Kaitoke , central Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt .
According to the 1925 New Zealand Official Yearbook, it drains about 1,800 cu ft (51 m 3)/sec [6] via the 20 km (12 mi)-long Wairaurāhiri River into Foveaux Strait 10 kilometres to the west of Te Waewae Bay.
