The Puerto Rico soccer league system is a series of soccer leagues based in Puerto Rico. Sometimes erroneously called the Puerto Rican soccer pyramid , teams and leagues in the United States are not linked by the system of promotion and relegation typical in soccer elsewhere.
The Liga Puerto Rico (LPR) is an amateur football competition organized by the Puerto Rican Football Federation. It is the top division football league on the island. The champion qualifies to participate in the Caribbean Club Shield each season. [1] [2]
Owing to its unique status in relation to the United States of America, the governance of football on Puerto Rico has been different from the traditional format.On May 14, 2008, the federation announced the creation of the Puerto Rico Soccer League, the first unified league in the history of the island's football, [2] although it folded in 2011.
Puerto Rico made its first appearance in the first CONCACAF Under-15 Championship in 2013. The team was managed by Jeaustin Campos . [ 2 ] They couldn't advance from the first round after 3 wins and 2 defeats.
Puerto Rico made its first appearance on the 1974 CONCACAF Championship, losing all of their matches.They didn't record a win until 1976 against Barbados. It wasn't until 2012 where they had their most successful campaign under coach Jeaustin Campos where they advance through all of the Caribbean qualification and made it to the CONCACAF Championship in Puebla, México.
The team returned in 2022 with Pablo Almagro a head coach. Puerto Rico advanced as group leaders through the qualifying round with 25 goals scored and none conceded. [6] They managed to get a historic result defeating Costa Rica in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Concacaf U-17 Championship. [7]
The Puerto Rico Islanders joined the North American Soccer League, which is the new second tier of football in the United States. In addition, Puerto Rico United, Club Atlético River Plate Puerto Rico and Sevilla FC Puerto Rico moved to USL Pro, the new third tier of football in the United States. The Puerto Rico Soccer League held a 2011 season.
