The Lincoln Highway was the first route to follow the corridor of US 30 in Ohio. The Lincoln Highway was established in 1913, following the current route of SR 309 and SR 81. [9] [10] Improvements and realignment to the highway were planned in 1917 and was to start in early 1918. The route was built to relieve some of the railroad congestion. [11]
Developed during Springfield's industrial growth of the 1850s to the 1920s, the South Fountain Avenue Historic District encompasses about 15 square blocks south of downtown Springfield, across the street from South High School. Two cities are located in Springfield Township: part of Mansfield — the county seat of Richland County — in the northeast, and Ontario in the center. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.6 square miles (58.9 km 2).All of the township is land and none of it is covered with water.
Springfield was founded in 1800, [2]: 129 but for its first half-century of existence, the land now included within the district was used for agricultural purposes. [2]: 458 However, by the 1840s, Springfield had grown eastward from its original core, and the brothers Gustavus and William Foos platted some of their land along High Street for residential purposes in 1848.
It is bordered to the south by the city of Springfield. Ohio State Route 334 crosses the southern tip of the CDP, leading east to Ohio State Route 4 and west to U.S. Route 68. Ohio State Route 72 (Urbana Road) forms part of the western edge of the CDP. The center of Springfield is about 6 miles (10 km) south of the center of Northridge.
