The facility has its origins in the Ecclesall Bierlow Union Workhouse which was designed by William Flockton and opened in 1844. [2] In December 1940, during the Second World War, the dining hall and nurses' home were damaged by enemy bombing. Middlewood Hospital is a former psychiatric hospital situated between the suburbs of Middlewood and Wadsley in the City of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England.It was also known as the South Yorkshire Asylum (1872–1888), the West Riding Asylum, Wadsley (1889–1929) and Wadsley Mental Hospital (1930–1948).
A group of children at Crumpsall Workhouse, 1895–97 Education was provided for the children, [ 42 ] but workhouse teachers were a particular problem. Poorly paid, without any formal training, and facing large classes of unruly children with little or no interest in their lessons, few stayed in the job for more than a few months. [ 68 ]
This initial group were supplemented by further probationers and 54 able-bodied female inmates who were paid a small salary. [2] This was the first training for nurses in any workhouse infirmary, paving the way for nurse training systems in other workhouses across the UK; [1] social reformer Eva McLaren was among those trained there as a nurse. St Philip's hospital began on the site of what was originally the Bear Yard Workhouse Infirmary, part of the Bear Yard Workhouse and Casual Wards. [1] The Bear Yard Workhouse and Casual Wards were built in 1890, with the buildings (excluding the infirmary, which was still active in 1901) being demolished in 1900 and replaced by the Strand Union in 1903.
