Gurucharan College, popularly known as GC College, recently upgraded to a State University under Assam Government, is a college imparting 10+2, undergraduate, certifications (self-financing) and postgraduate (self-financing) education under the aegis of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, Guwahati and Assam University, Silchar.
It was previously known as the Assam Joint Admission Test (Assam-JAT) until the year 2012 and comprised both engineering and medical entrance examinations. Since then, the medical section of JAT was known as Assam Medical Entrance Examination (Assam-MEE). It is a highly competitive test having selection ratio of approximately around 4.48%.
The university was established by an act of the State Legislature: the Gauhati University Act 1947 (Assam Act, XVI of 1947) of the government of Assam in 1948. The first court meeting of the university was held on 26 January 1948, which is considered the foundation day, at the old Sudmerson Hall of Cotton College, Guwahati .
