John Napier of Merchiston (/ ˈ n eɪ p i ər / NAY-pee-ər; [1] Latinized as Ioannes Neper; 1 February 1550 – 4 April 1617), nicknamed Marvellous Merchiston, was a Scottish landowner known as a mathematician, physicist, and astronomer. He was the 8th Laird of Merchiston.
John James Napier was a Victorian portrait painter active in London between 1856 and 1876. [1] During that period he exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. [2] He married Janet Parker Vance Langmuir on 2 April 1858 in Glasgow [3] and they had two children, Janet and James. His wife died on 26 May 1862, aged 29.
