Plattsburgh Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force (USAF) Strategic Air Command (SAC) base covering 3,447 acres (13.7 km 2) in the extreme northeast corner of New York, located on the western shore of Lake Champlain opposite Burlington, Vermont, in the town of Plattsburgh, New York.

Activated at Amarillo AFB, Texas, in 1963, the 461st absorbed the personnel and equipment of the inactivating 4128th Strategic Wing. Trained with B-52s to-maintain heavy bombardment proficiency, and participated in numerous-operational readiness inspections and actual and simulated exercises as directed by the Strategic Air Command.
