The parallel 36°30′ north is part of a nearly straight east–west line of state borders (with small variations) starting on the East Coast of the United States, beginning with the border between Virginia and North Carolina. However, this boundary and the one between Kentucky and Tennessee lie a few miles north of 36°30′ in places.

Under the Royal Proclamation of 1763, it also marks how far west a British American colonist was allowed to reside. [5] Its exact location is 36°36'2.91" N, 83°40'31.23" W. [6]
The border with Arkansas then runs west (approximately) along the 36°30' parallel to the border with Oklahoma. The southern border of Tennessee was declared to be located on the 35th parallel north when Tennessee was established as a state by Congress on June 1, 1796, which is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) north of the present-day tripoint. This would have allowed a small portion of the Tennessee River to be located in Georgia.
