Coulter pine (Pinus coulteri), or big-cone pine, is a conifer in the genus Pinus of the family Pinaceae.Coulter pine is an evergreen conifer that lives up to 100 years. [2] It is a native of the coastal mountains of Southern California in the United States and northern Baja California in Mexico, occurring in mediterranean climates, where winter rains are infrequent and summers are dry with ...
The cones are broad, ovoid, 8–15 cm (3–6 in) long, and take 36 months to mature, longer than any other pine. The seeds ( pine nuts , piñones , pinhões , pinoli , or pignons ) are large, 2 cm ( 3 ⁄ 4 in) long, and pale brown with a powdery black coating that rubs off easily, and have a rudimentary 4–8 mm ( 5 ⁄ 32 – 5 ⁄ 16 in ...
The leaves are in fascicles of three, [6] needle-like, yellow-green, twisted, and 9–15 centimeters (3 + 1 ⁄ 2 –6 in) long. The cones are resin-sealed and irregularly shaped, [4] 8–16 cm (3 + 1 ⁄ 4 – 6 + 1 ⁄ 4 in) long and clustered in whorls of three to six on the branches. The scales end in a short stout prickle.
Unusually for a pine, the cones normally point forward along the branch, sometimes curling around it. That is an easy way to tell it apart from the similar lodgepole pine in more western areas of North America. The cones on many mature trees are serotinous. They open when exposed to intense heat, greater than or equal to 50 °C (122 °F). [16]
The cones are symmetrical ovoid, 4–6 cm (1 + 1 ⁄ 2 – 2 + 1 ⁄ 4 in) long by 2.5 cm (1 in) broad, and purple before maturity, ripening to nut-blue and opening to 4–5 cm (1 + 1 ⁄ 2 –2 in) broad, the scales without a prickle and almost stalkless. [2] The pine grows well in sandy soils and on soils which are too poor for white pine. [5]
Ovulate cone Pollen cones, 2 cm scale bar. P. radiata is a coniferous evergreen tree growing to 15–30 m (50–100 ft) tall in the wild, but up to 60 m (200 ft) in cultivation in optimum conditions, with upward pointing branches and a rounded top.

The cones open to 4 to 6 cm (1 + 1 ⁄ 2 to 2 + 1 ⁄ 2 in) broad when mature, releasing the seeds immediately after opening. The seeds are 5 mm ( 3 ⁄ 16 in) long, with a 12 to 22 mm ( 1 ⁄ 2 to 7 ⁄ 8 in) wing; they are mostly dispersed by the wind, but some are also dispersed by Clark's nutcrackers .
