The Doric portico of the Vermont State House dates to Ammi B. Young's second 1833 state house. The current structure was designed by architect Thomas Silloway (1828–1910) amplifying the design of an earlier structure designed by Ammi B. Young, (1798–1874) later supervising architect of the U.S. Treasury.
The United States Capitol building features a central rotunda below the Capitol dome. Built between 1818 and 1824, the rotunda has been described as the Capitol's "symbolic and physical heart". The rotunda is connected by corridors leading south to the House of Representatives and north to the Senate chambers.
Also on the ceiling, a plaster medallion in the form of a sunburst features 13 stars to represent the original colonies. The design mirrors a similar pattern on the floor, where a carpet made by William Sprague, a local weaver, features the shields of each of the 13 original states. The carpet seen today is a reproduction of the original. [2] [7]
The general design of the chamber, a rectangular, two-story room in the center of the Capitol's north wing, includes 100 individual desks on a tiered platform. This platform, semi-circular in shape, faces a raised rostrum in the front of the room. On all four sides of the chamber's second level, a visitor's gallery overlooks the Senate floor. [2]
The Michigan State Capitol is 267 feet (81 metres) from the ground to the tip of finial/spire above the dome. The building is 420 ft 2 in (128.07 m) long and 273 ft 11 in (83.49 m) wide (including approaches). The capitol occupies 1.16 acres (4,700 m 2), has a perimeter of 1,520 ft (460 m). [12]
The capitol building is part of the Empire State Plaza complex on State Street in Capitol Park. Housing the New York State Legislature , the building was completed in 1899 at a cost of US$25 million (equivalent to $774 million in modern dollars), [ 3 ] making it the most expensive government building of its time.
