The Sega CD, originally released as the Mega-CD (メガCD, Mega-Shī Dī) in most regions outside of North America and Brazil, is an add-on device for the Sega Genesis video game console, designed and produced by Sega. It was released in Japan in 1991, North America in 1992 and in PAL regions in 1993.

The term ROM image originated when most console games were distributed on cartridges containing ROM chips, but achieved such widespread usage that it is still applied to images of newer games distributed on CD-ROMs or other optical media. ROM images of commercial games, firmware, etc. usually contain copyrighted software.

Early in its lifespan, many upgraded Sega Genesis ports were cancelled, while later in its lifespan, game development was cancelled in favor of moving games to the Sega 32X, Sega Saturn, or even Sony's original PlayStation console.
