The Saigon River (Vietnamese: Sông Sài Gòn) is a river located in southern Vietnam that rises near Phum Daung in southeastern Cambodia, flows south and southeast for about 230 km (140 mi) and empties into the Nhà Bè River, which in its turn empties into the South China Sea some 20 km (12 mi) northeast of the Mekong Delta.

The park stretches along the right bank of Saigon River from the Saigon River Tunnel to Ba Son Bridge, opposite to Bạch Đằng Quay park on the left bank. [2] There are plans to extend the park from the Ba Son Bridge to the Thu Thiem Bridge, the extend section is called Creative Park (Công viên Sáng Tạo). [3] [4] [5]
The woods were used by the Viet Cong (VC) as a base area during the Vietnam War. During Operation Circle Pines from 29 March to 5 April 1966, the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment attacked the woods and discovered that the VC had built extensive bunker and tunnels systems with some of the tunnels three or four levels deep.

During the Easter Offensive, after overrunning much of Bình Định Province, by 1 May the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) besieged the ARVN 40th Regiment, 22nd Division at the base. The 40th Regiment, supposed to number 3,000 soldiers had been reduced 40% by desertion and 30% by casualties. [ 7 ]

This site, called Newport, was in a sparsely populated area adjacent to Highway 1 and the bridge connecting Saigon with the newly developing Long Binh Post some 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Saigon.
