In 1972, Hickory High School moved to its current location of 1234 3rd Street NE. The Hickory Board of Education agreed to officially name the new school building its original name once again, Hickory High School. Hickory High is currently classified as a NCHSAA 3A high school. It is the largest school within the Hickory City School district.
The first school building was used by elementary through high school students until 1953, when a new building was provided specifically for St. Stephens High School. As of 2021, the principal is Kyle Stocks. St. Stephens enrolls approximately 1,250 students each year. Harry M. Arndt Middle School is the feeder school of St. Stephens.

The district used to have a fourth school, Grove, but it was shut down and destroyed in June 2010 after a decision by the board of education. [2] Prior to that, there used to be a school called Indian Ridge, but this closed in 1982, with the building sold off to the Northbrook Park District, and now operates as the Northbrook Leisure Center.
