Manhattan (/ m æ n ˈ h æ t ən / MANN-haton) is a village in Will County, Illinois. The population was 9,385 at the time of the 2020 census. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the population to be 10,037 As of July 2021. [2] The community is located in northeastern Illinois approximately 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Chicago.

Free Frank McWorter purchased a 160-acre tract in Pike County, Illinois in 1830 and settled with his family in 1831. [3] McWorter founded a town, which he thought might benefit from increasing commerce in Illinois due to the planned Illinois and Michigan Canal. He purchased the 80-acre tract from the federal government in 1835. [3]
