A fracture critical bridge is a bridge or similar span that is vulnerable to collapse of one or more spans as a result of the failure in tension of a single element. While a fracture critical design is not considered unsafe, it is subject to special inspection requirements that focus on the tension elements of its structure.
Emergency repairs to bridge completed on May 25, 2012. There were preexisting plans before the collapse to replace the bridge with a 4-lane bridge over the river. The new bridge opened in April 2016, and the original bridge was demolished that July. Limfjord Railway Bridge: Aalborg: Denmark 28 March 2012: steel beam, openable Ship collision none
Attempts have been made to increase the safety of bridges with pin and hanger assemblies by adding some form of redundancy to the assembly. Retrofits that add redundancy to pin and hanger assemblies include adding a "catcher's mitt"—a short steel beam attached to the bottom of the cantilevered girder that extends out beneath the suspended girder to "catch" the suspended girder should ...
Designers typically adhere to standardised design codes when specifying tension members, which are critical components of structural systems. In the United States, the Steel Construction Manual published by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) is the primary reference for structural steel design, while in Europe, the design is guided by the Eurocodes published by the Comité ...
The NBI can classify bridges as "structurally deficient," which means that the condition of the bridge includes a significant defect, which often means that speed or weight limits must be put on the bridge to ensure safety; a rating of 4 or lower on any of items 58, 59, 60, or 62 (deck, superstructure, substructure, and culverts, respectively ...

The building was a composite steel-frame and steel-reinforced concrete design. [18] On August 1, 2007, the I-35W Mississippi River Bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota collapsed during afternoon rush hour, resulting in the deaths of 13 people. The collapse was attributed to the failure of a gusset plate connecting two members within one of the main ...
