Chewbacca (/ tʃ uː ˈ b ɑː k ə / choo-BAH-kə), nicknamed "Chewie", is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise. He is a Wookiee—a tall, hairy, highly intelligent species originating from the planet Kashyyyk. [4] [5] He is 7.5 feet (2.3 m) tall, and typically wears only a bandolier and a tool pouch.
The character has made appearances in a few other pieces of Star Wars media, including the 2008 animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars (voiced by Tom Kenny) [44] and the 2015 video game Star Wars Battlefront. [45]
In the Star Wars films, Chewbacca carries a "bowcaster," the traditional weapon developed and used by Wookiees. Bowcasters launch quarrels, crossbow bolts that through magnetic propulsion appear as elongated blaster bolts due to their velocity. The propulsion technique gives the quarrels extremely high stopping power.
Bizarrely, it is also the official debut of cult Star Wars character, Boba Fett, in an animated segment, which has since been repackaged as a short film called The Story of the Faithful Wookiee.
