Levi Strauss & Co. (/ ˈ l iː v aɪ ˈ s t r aʊ s / LEE-vy STROWSS) is an American clothing company known worldwide for its Levi's (/ ˈ l iː v aɪ z / LEE-vyze) brand of denim jeans.It was founded in May 1853 [9] when German-Jewish immigrant Levi Strauss moved from Buttenheim, Bavaria, to San Francisco, California, to open a West Coast branch of his brothers' New York dry goods business.
These jeans were known as the 505 regular fit jeans. The 505s are almost identical to the 501s with the exception of the button-fly. The Levi's Corporation also introduced a slim boot-cut fit known as 517 and 527. The difference between the two is that the 517s sit at the waist line and the 527s sit below the waist line.
Levi Strauss was never married, and died on September 26, 1902 in San Francisco. His estate was worth about $30 million (equivalent to $855 million in 2023). [1] Levi's nephew Sigmund Stern's only child, Elise Fanny Stern, [19] married Walter A. Haas, the son of Abraham Haas, whose descendants are the current owners of Levi Strauss & Co. [20]
