On January 16, 2018, she became the first Latina to be appointed as a member of the Durham City Council to fill the seat of former Councilman Steve Schewel after he was elected as Mayor of Durham. Durham's population, as of July 1, 2019 and according to the 2019 U.S. census data estimate, had grown to 278,993, [68] making it the 50th-fastest-growing city in the US, and the 2nd-fastest-growing city in North Carolina, behind Cary but ahead of Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro. [68]
The community is centered on N. Roxboro Street (Business US-501) and the Old Oxford Highway. The area has been within the Durham city limits since the 1950s. [1] Branford Marsalis, the noted jazz saxophonist, named his 2006 album Braggtown after the neighborhood; Marsalis has been a resident of the Durham area for the past few years.
In 2018 leaders of the Walltown Community Association met with Durham City Council officials to propose city regulations and zoning standards to help reduce property tax increases and raised rent in the neighborhood, which has forced some residents to relocate. [2] [23] [24] [25]
