Riverside High School opened in 1991 (the first class graduated in 1993) and currently enrolls approximately 1,700 students. It is one of seven high schools in the Durham Public School System. The school offers classes on a block schedule on a semester basis, with students taking 4 classes—generally 2 core and 2 elective—each semester.
In 1927, Hope Valley School was built for grades 1 through 11. It was the first public school in Southwestern Durham. Changes to the Hope Valley School facility were made in 1941 and 1952. the school was subsequently downgraded to an elementary school with the opening of Southern High School in the fall of 1956.
Both earned associate degrees from Durham Technical Community College, thanks to two years at Middle College High School, which allows students to enroll in community college classes for free.

Until the early 1990s, Durham County had two public school systems: the Durham City Schools System and the Durham County Schools System. A new high school was built close to Northern in 1991, which was named Riverside High School. This establishment decreased Northern High School's enrollment to its current number of 1,400 plus.
