UY Scuti (BD-12°5055) is a red supergiant star, located 5,900 light-years away in the constellation Scutum. It is also a pulsating variable star , with a maximum brightness of magnitude 8.29 and a minimum of magnitude 10.56, which is too dim for naked-eye visibility.

UY Scuti is a red supergiant and is also one of the largest stars currently known with a radius over 900 times that of the Sun. [11] RSGC1-F01 is another red supergiant whose radius is over 1,450 times that of the Sun. [12] Scutum contains several clusters of supergiant stars, including RSGC1, [13] Stephenson 2 [14] [15] and RSGC3.
First, UY Scuti, is clearly using an outdated distance estimation, which could mean that its upper radius estimate is spurious. The lower radius estimate is derived from a questionable logL of 5.00 which is exactly the same as others in the paper, this luminosity could also be considered outdated.

Absolute magnitude is defined as the apparent magnitude that a star or object would have if it were observed from a distance of 10 parsecs (33 light-years; 3.1 × 10 14 kilometres; 1.9 × 10 14 miles). Therefore, it is of greater use in stellar astrophysics since it refers to a property of a star regardless of how close it is to Earth.
