Tatuidris tatusia is the only species in Tatuidris, a monotypic genus and one of only two extant genera in the subfamily Agroecomyrmecinae. [2] [3] A new species, T. kapasi, was described by Lacau & Groc in 2012, [4] but has now been relegated to a junior synonym under T. tatusia based on the extent of the morphological variability encountered throughout this broad geographic range.
The subfamily rank of the armadillo ants was reassessed by Baroni Urbani & de Andrade (2007) in their last systematic assessment of the dacetines. They analyzed a morphological dataset that included former dacetines, basicerotines , phalacromyrmecines , and Tatuidris , as well as other non-Myrmicinae taxa such as the Australian genus Myrmecia ...
Nine-banded armadillos have been observed to roll about on ant hills to dislodge and consume the resident ants. They supplement their diets with amphibians and small reptiles , especially in more wintery months when such prey tends to be more sluggish, and occasionally bird eggs and baby mammals .
Ants have come to occupy virtually all major terrestrial habitats, with the exception of tundra and cold ever-wet forests. They display a wide range of social behaviors, foraging habits and associations with other organisms, which has generated scientific and public interest. [1] The following is a list of worldwide ant genera organised by ...
Greater naked-tailed armadillos feed on ants and termites and sleeps in burrows, often dug within termite mounds. Burrows are typically about 20 to 25 cm (7.9 to 9.8 in) in width, and positioned so that their entrances face away from the prevailing winds.
Nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus). Cingulata is an order of armored placental mammals.Members of this order are called cingulates, or colloquially, armadillos. They are primarily found in South America, though the northern naked-tailed armadillo is found mainly in Central America and the nine-banded armadillo has a range extending into North America.
Among the smallest of the long-nosed armadillos, individuals of the southern species measure about 30 cm (12 in) in head-body length, with a tail about 17 cm (6.7 in) long. With no discernible sexual dimorphism , both males and females weigh about 2 kg (4.4 lb).
Ants first arose during the mid-Cretaceous, more than 100 million years ago, associated with the rise of flowering plants and an increase in forest ground litter. [5] The earliest known ants evolved from a lineage within the aculeate wasps, and a recent study suggests that they are a sister group of Apoidea . [ 6 ]
