School of Industrial Art and Technical Design for Women was an American school of industrial design founded in 1881 and located in New York City. [1] Pupils were made familiar with the practicality of design, with the workings of machinery, and the technicalities of design as applied to various industries.
Night classes for Design are added for men who work during the day, but would like training in Architecture and Engineering at night. In 1854, a Day School of Design opened for women—one of the first US arts programs for women. In 1860, the Day School for men opened, and in 1870, the Day school became co-ed. [6]
It also runs graduate and postgraduate courses in fine art as well as design courses such as graphic design, illustration and 3D design. It has been ranked as the top British art school by The Times. [1] It was established as the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in 1898, and adopted its present name in 1989. [2]
The Cranbrook Academy of Art is a graduate-only school oriented around a professional, studio practice. [10] The school continues to be known for its apprenticeship method of teaching, in which a small group of students—usually 10 to 16 per class, or 150 students in total for the 10 departments—study under a single artist-in-residence for the duration of their curriculum.
Initially, the school offered eight majors: ceramics, graphic design, historic preservation, textile design, interior design, painting, photography, and printmaking. [6] In May 1981, the first graduate received a degree. The following year, the first graduating class received degrees.
Originally intended to be named simply "the Union", the Cooper Union began with adult education in night classes on the subjects of applied sciences and architectural drawing, as well as day classes primarily intended for women on the subjects of photography, telegraphy, typewriting and shorthand in what was called the college's Female School ...
