The position was established under section 64 of the Constitution of the Solomon Islands of 1978, when the country became independent from the United Kingdom. The parliamentary building was built as a US$ 5 million gift from the United States government, [1] in memory of the US servicemen who died in the Battle of Guadalcanal. [2] The two-storey conical concrete building was built by Japanese construction company, Kitano, in 1993, [ 3 ] under the supervision of the US Naval Services.
