Five professional leagues of men's soccer teams [citation needed] are sanctioned by the Professional Division of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF or U.S. Soccer). The top-level men's league is Major League Soccer (MLS) and the second level men's league is the USL Championship.

MLS Next Pro is in the third tier of the United States men's soccer league system. It currently consists 29 teams: ten in the Southern United States, seven in the Western United States, six in the Midwestern United States, four in the Northeastern United States, and one each in Eastern and Western Canada.
It was the first outdoor soccer league to feature teams from throughout the United States since the demise of the North American Soccer League in 1984. The UPSL was formed in 2011 with 10 teams, and has grown to include over 400 member clubs across the nation. Now featuring numerous MLS U19 teams including LAFC, Philadelphia Union and LA Galaxy, the Premier Division is widely regarded as occupying the unofficial 4th tier of US Soccer.
