Baia Mare (US: / ˌ b ɑː j ə ˈ m ɑːr ə / BAH-yə MAR-ə, [2] [3] Romanian: [ˈbaja ˈmare] ⓘ; Hungarian: Nagybánya; German: Frauenbach or Groß-Neustadt; Latin: Rivulus Dominarum) is a municipality along the Săsar River, in northwestern Romania; it is the capital of Maramureș County.

For the 2014–2020 time period, the Baia Mare Metropolitan Area was slated to become an important instrument for accessing EU structural funds, which would enable the implementation of local infrastructure investment projects, thereby increasing the quality of life and reducing disparities between localities.

The town is located at the eastern extremity of Maramureș County, 123 km (76 mi) from the county seat, Baia Mare.Covering 12% of the county's area, it borders Ukraine to the north, Suceava County to the east, Bistrița-Năsăud County to the south, and Moisei commune to the west.
The commune is located in the central part of Maramureș County, 44 km (27 mi) northeast of the county seat, Baia Mare, and lies on the banks of the river Cosău. County road DJ109F [ ro ] connects Budești with the town of Cavnic , 17 km (11 mi) away, through the Neteda Pass [ ro ] .
The capital of the region was Baia Mare, and its territory comprised an area similar to what are nowadays the Maramureș and Satu Mare counties. In 1952 the raion Vișeu was attached to the Baia Mare Region from the Rodna Region, after the dissolution of the latter.
The town belongs to the Baia Mare metropolitan area. It is located in the western part of the Maramureș County, 10 km (6.2 mi) from the county seat, Baia Mare, on the border with Satu Mare County. Tăuții-Măgherăuș lies on the right bank of the Someș River; the Lăpuș River discharges into the Someș in Bușag village.
