Chinese character external structure is on how the writing units are combined level by level into a complete character. There are three levels of structural units of Chinese characters: strokes, components, and whole characters. [3] For example, character 字 (character) is composed of two components, each of which is composed of three stokes:

Strokes combine with each other in a Chinese character in different ways. There are three types of stroke combinations between two strokes: [9] Separation: the strokes are separated from each other. Such as: 八, 三, 小. Connection: the strokes are connected, such as 匕, 正, 厂, 弓, 凹, 凸. Intersection: the strokes are intersected.
A compound stroke (also called a complex stroke) is produced when two or more basic strokes are combined in a single stroke written without lifting the writing instrument from the writing surface. The character 永 ( pinyin : yǒng ) "eternity", described in more detail in § Eight Principles of Yong , demonstrates one of these compound strokes.
The condition for a single stroke to be a component is: occupies a relatively independent location usually occupied by a multiple-stroke component in a character. For example: the top stroke 一 in character 元, the bottom 一 in 旦, the left 丨 in 旧, the right ㇟ in 礼, the central ㇔ in 勺, and the outer ㇆ in 司.
