This is a list of state prisons in Nevada operated by the Nevada Department of Corrections. The only federal prison in Nevada is Federal Prison Camp, Nellis, closed in 2005. This list does not include county jails located in the state of Nevada.
The 145,000-square-foot (13,500 m 2) Southern Nevada Women's Correctional Center was built to house around 500 inmates. Nevada State Prison (NSP), also in Carson City, which was the only state penitentiary for many decades, underwent expansion in the early 1960s. The result was a second facility in Carson City that would become known as Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC). [4]

The 1,576,000 sq ft (146,400 m 2) complex lies approximately 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Las Vegas along highway 95. [1] It was designed as the most secure prison within the Nevada Department of Corrections system. High Desert State Prison contains 12 housing units designed to house 336 inmates each.
At a Florida Correctional Services Corp. facility called Cypress Creek, north of Tampa, six juveniles escaped between 2000 and 2001. In 2001, at a youth prison run by the company in Nevada, juvenile inmates rioted and took over the facility.
