The Little Cottonwood stock is a granitic intrusion that extends from the mouth of the canyon almost to Snowbird ski resort. It is Oligocene in age, roughly 30.5 to 29 million years old, composed primarily of granodiorite, quartz monzonite, and granite, with some mafic enclaves.
The entire Little Cottonwood Creek drainage basin encompasses 46 square miles (120 km 2), ranging in elevation from about 4,490 to 11,500 feet (1,370 to 3,510 m). [ 4 ] Communities were founded around the creek soon after the pioneer settlement of Salt Lake Valley in 1847 and supported agricultural activities.
Precipitation runoff from the mountain's north slope drains to Little Cottonwood Creek, whereas the south slope drains into headwaters of the American Fork River. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises approximately 3,000 feet (914 meters) above Little Cottonwood Canyon in 1.5 mile (2.4 km).

In Little Cottonwood Canyon about 10 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, traffic had already slowed to a stop because of heavy snow on Saturday when an avalanche hit the area.
