Runners line up for an early Ben Race. The starter is on left with a shotgun 1979 Ben Nevis Race. The first timed event on Ben Nevis was in 1895. [1] William Swan, a barber from Fort William, made the first recorded timed ascent up the mountain on or around 27 September of that year, when he ran from the old post office in Fort William to the summit and back in 2 hours 41 minutes. The Ben Nevis Ultra is to be distinguished from the annual Ben Nevis Race. In 2017, the Ultra ran from the southern shore of Loch Ness, through glens and over the summit of Ben Nevis before finishing in Kinlochleven. The distance was around 120 kilometres (75 mi) and the route had roughly 4,000 metres (13,000 ft) of ascent. [14]
The summit can also be reached on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, a rack and pinion railway opened in 1896 which carries passengers the 4.7 mi (7.6 km) from Llanberis to the summit station. [17] The summit also houses a visitor centre called Hafod Eryri, opened in 2009 to replace one built in the 1930s. [15] [18]

The Ben Nevis Race started in 1937, but that is already (properly, IMO) in the "Outdoor recreation" section. Given that there isn't much historical material available post-1911, I still believe that this article fulfills the good article criteria . — hike395 ( talk ) 20:26, 1 December 2024 (UTC) [ reply ]
