Slazenger (/ ˈ s l æ z ə n dʒ ər /) is a British sports equipment brand owned by the Frasers Group (formerly Sports Direct). [1] One of the world's oldest sport brands, the company was established as a sporting goods shop in 1881 by entrepreneurial brothers, Ralph and Albert Slazenger, on Cannon Street, London. [2]
The remainder of Dunlop Slazenger was eventually sold to Sports Direct for £40 million in 2004. Since then Dunlop, Slazenger and other brands have been licensed or sold to other companies, notably Dunlop Sport being sold to Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI), a company of Sumitomo Group, for US$ 137.5 million in 2016–17. The Dunlop Masters golf tournament was established in 1946. [9] It was sponsored by Dunlop until 1982, and is now known as the British Masters. In 1957 Dunlop acquired the golf club manufacturer John Letters of Scotland. [10] In 1959 the Slazenger Group was acquired. [5] The Dunlop "flying D" logo was introduced in 1960. [9]
Knickerbockers have been popular in other sporting endeavors, particularly golf, rock climbing, cross-country skiing, fencing and bicycling. In cycling, they were standard attire for nearly 100 years, with the majority of archival photos of cyclists in the era before World War I showing men wearing knickerbockers tucked into long socks.

The company was founded in 1987 by Gerald Montiel and John Ashworth as Charter Golf, Inc, from an office in the Los Angeles garment district. Ashworth was a golf enthusiast and Montiel ran a sporting goods store. Montiel hired Ashworth as a buyer for the golf department in 1985. They observed that golf fashions in the 1980s could use more style.
