The M224 60 mm Lightweight Company Mortar System (LWCMS) is a smoothbore, muzzle-loading, high-angle-of-fire mortar used for close-in support of ground troops. It was deployed extensively in the War in Afghanistan by the United States military .
The LR gun-mortar was designed to fire specialized long range ammunition with an indirect fire range of 5,000 m (16,000 ft) and a direct fire range of 500 m (1,600 ft). [2] The standard LR high-explosive projectile possessed a fuze which detonated at any angle of impact. [2] It was manufactured of perlitic cast iron and had unfolding fins. [2]
Modern mortars and their ammunition are generally much smaller and lighter than long range artillery, such as field guns and howitzers, which allows light (60 mm (2.4 in)) and medium (81 mm (3.2 in)/82 mm (3.2 in)) mortars to be considered light weapons; i.e. capable of transport by personnel without vehicle assistance.
