Smith Fork is a tributary of the Gunnison River that flows in Gunnison and Delta counties in western Colorado. The river is signed as "Smith Fork Creek" where it goes under Colorado State Highway 92 in Crawford, Colorado. The river begins at the confluence of the North Smith Fork Gunnison River and South Smith Fork in the West Elk Mountains.
Fairview Peak's climate is classified as a tundra climate (ET) in the Köppen system and more specifically as an alpine climate, with cold, snowy winters and cool summers. It receives precipitation as snow in winter and as thunderstorms in summer, with June typically being a drier month. [7] [8] [9]
Precipitation runoff from the mountain's west slope drains to the Roaring Fork River via Cooper Creek and Castle Creek, whereas the east slope drains into the headwaters of the Taylor River. Topographic relief is modest as the summit rises over 2,430 feet (741 m) above Taylor River in one mile (1.6 km).
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison was established as a national monument on March 2, 1933. It was redesignated a national park on October 21, 1999, [27] and incorporated 4,000 acres owned by the Bureau of Land Management. [28] The Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area was created at the same time.
