Joseph C Gayetty [disputed – discuss]. Joseph C. Gayetty (c.1827 – May 2, 1895) was an American inventor credited with the invention of commercial toilet paper. [1] [2] [3] It was the first and remained only one of the few commercial toilet papers from 1857 to 1890 remaining in common use until the invention of splinter-free toilet paper in 1935 by the Northern Tissue Company.
Toilet paper dispensed from rolls was popularized when the Scott Paper Company began marketing it in 1890. [14] The manufacturing of this product had a long period of refinement, considering that as late as the 1930s, a selling point of the Northern Tissue company was that their toilet paper was "splinter free". [15]
Toilet-related injuries are surprisingly common, with some estimates ranging as high as 40,000 in the US every year. [5] In the past, this number would have been much higher, due to the material from which toilet paper was made. This was shown in a 1935 Northern Tissue advertisement which depicted splinter-free toilet paper. [6]
